Ever heard of the Skyscraper Technique?
This is a strategy that doesn’t seem to be true. But trust me, this is the real deal. A large number of marketers are currently using it to generate quality backlinks, and above all, traffic.
I used this simple trick to generate,
- 654 backlinks
- 610,000+ visitors
- $21,300+ in revenue
All in just 12 months.
Here’s the backlinks data from the GSC:
By the way, let’s get started right now.
What Is the Skyscraper Technique?
Imagine you are walking through the city skyline. There are countless tall buildings, but one skyscraper stands out above all the others. It is the one that catches everyone’s attention.
The Skyscraper Technique, created by Brian Dean, works the same way for content. You find the tallest building (a high-performing piece of content), and then you build something even taller.
Longer, better, shinier, something people can’t help but link to.
In other words, it works like this:
- Find content that already has lots of backlinks.
- Create something even better.
- Reach out to the people who linked to the original.
Sounds simple, right?
Now, let me show you how I did it step by step.
Step 1: Find Content With Lots of Backlinks
You can’t build a skyscraper if you don’t know what’s already out there.
Your job is to hunt down content that has:
- A ton of backlinks.
- A lot of room for improvement.
How Do You Find It?
Here’s my secret sauce (which isn’t so secret):
First Step: Start with a Google search for your target keyword.
Example: “skyscraper technique” or “best content strategy for backlinks”.
Second Step: Look for the pages that rank in the top 10.
Why?
Because Google’s already told you these are the big fishes.
Third Step: Use a tool like Ahrefs Site Explorer or SEMrush, Ubersuggest, etc. to check:
✔ How many backlinks the page has.
✔ Who’s linking to it.
Boom.
You now have a list of content pieces that people love linking to.
Your next step?
Outdo them.
Step 2: Create Something That Blows Their Minds
This is where the magic happens.
Your job is not to copy the content, it is to improve it in every way possible. Remember, you are not just building a building, you are building a skyscraper that stands out.
Here’s what makes the content skyscraper-worthy:
1. Make It Longer
If the top-ranking piece is 1,000 words, aim for 2,000–3,000 words.
But don’t add fluff.
Pack in value.
3. Add More Details
Include things the original missed:
- Case studies
- Data, stats, and graphs
- Step-by-step instructions
- Images or videos
Like, this Untapped Keywords content of ours.
If you’re teaching something, make it stupidly easy to follow.
2. Make It Better Presented
People judge content by its appearance (sad but true).
Make your content shine:
- Use images and infographics
- Add headings, bullets, and short paragraphs
- Ensure it’s fast and mobile-friendly
- Add a Table of Contents for easy navigation
Pro Tip: Treat your content like a product like the iGrowthful Strategies. If it is more valuable and easier to consume, people will choose yours every time.
Also, be sure to implement the content optimization checklist.
Step 3: Promote the Content
Okay, so you have built your skyscraper. Now it is time to invite people to come take a look. So, at this time, you can now reach out to websites that linked to the original content.
Why?
Because they’ve already proven they’re willing to link to this topic.
How Do You Do That?
First Step: Go back to Ahrefs (or your tool of choice) and pull the backlink report for the original content.
Second Step: Make a list of all the websites that are linked to it.
Third Step: Reach out to them with a polite, to-the-point email.
Here’s an example:
Subject: I saw your article on [Topic]
Hi [Name],
I came across your article on [Topic], and I noticed you linked to [Old Content]. I recently created an updated version that’s more detailed and includes fresh data. I thought it might be a great resource for your readers.
Here’s the link: [Your Skyscraper Content]
If you think it is valuable, feel free to replace the old link or add it as an additional resource. Either way, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Best,
[Your Name]
Why does this work?
Because you’re helping them.
They linked to the original because it was valuable.
If yours is better, it’s a no-brainer.
The Results
When I put this skyscraper link building strategy into action, I achieved:
- 654 backlinks from 519 different websites
- 610,000+ visitors to my content
- $21,300+ in revenue
And all this happened in 12 months.
Here’s the traffic data:
Was it easy?
Not exactly. It took work.
But it wasn’t rocket science either. I just followed the SEO technique step by step.
This strategy will always work as long as:
- You find content that already performs well
- You create something better
- You promote it like a pro
Final Thoughts
The Skyscraper Technique isn’t an overhyped, overnight hack.
It is a proven strategy that works.
Because it is built on logic:
- Find what works.
- Improve it.
- Share it.
If you are tired of creating content that nobody reads, you can now try this method. Build something incredible. Share it with the right people. See backlinks and traffic soar.
I have done it, and you can too.
