Existing Content Optimization Is Giving 40,000+/M Visitors

Yes, you read that right.

I updated some old blog posts on the website of one of my clients (who took the Enterprise package of my SEO Services), and did a little backlink outreach.

But most of the links came automatically.

Results?

  • 40,000+ monthly visitors
  • 2,550+ keywords ranked
  • 164 quality backlinks

Traffic data from the Ahrefs Webmaster Tools:

content optimization

That’s right.

Our team didn’t write 20 new articles.

I just used the existing content optimization strategy.

And the result?

A tiny change turned into a 1,600x traffic increase.

Let me show you exactly how I pulled this off and how you can too.

Step 1: Ahrefs’ Site Explorer

  1. I opened Ahrefs Site Explorer and typed in my website like it owed me money.
  2. Then I clicked on the Opportunities report.
  3. From here, I looked at two things that sound like rejected Netflix shows:
  • Low-hanging fruit keywords
  • Content with declining traffic

These two reports are goldmines and buried treasure.

    Here’s the visual version:

Step 2: Spot the Low-Hanging Fruit

Do you know how some keywords are almost ranking?

Like they’re loitering around page 2, just waiting to be invited to the big dance?

Those are the low-hanging fruits. They’re keywords (like comparison keywords, underserved keywords, etc.) you already kinda rank for, and just need a nudge.

Or a push or a gentle kick.

    Here’s what I did:

    1. Exported all those keywords.
    2. Sorted them by position and traffic potential.
    3. Found the blog posts they were attached to.

Now I have a hit list of pages I could upgrade and keywords I could sprinkle like SEO fairy dust.

Step 3: Keyword Placement For Existing Content Optimization

    Now comes the fun part.

I took those keywords and injected them into the content like a caffeinated SEO surgeon.

    Where did I put them?

    1. In Paragraphs: Rewrite sentences to naturally include the keywords.
    2. In Subheadings: H2s and H3s love a good keyword.
    3. In Image ALT Text: Google reads it, so don’t leave it blank.
    4. In FAQs: Great for voice search and featured snippets.
    5. In Titles: Because first impressions matter.

    Step 4: Update And Publish

Once I made the updates, I hit publish like it was the big red button in a spy movie.

    Then…, I waited.

    Not long, though.

Some pages started climbing within a few days, others took a few weeks, and others took a few months. But almost all of them saw a solid uplift in traffic and rankings.

No voodoo. No guesswork. Just strategic content updates.

    Why Existing Content Optimization Works

Google’s goal is to serve the best content.

So, if your post is from 2017 and says ā€œSnapchat is the actual future,ā€ Google’s going to side-eye you hard. But when you update it with fresh info, more relevant keywords, and maybe a 2025, 2026, 2027, or 2028 reference or two, boom.

Google’s happy. Readers are happy. You’re happy.

    Also:

    • You already have authority on that topic
    • You already have backlinks hopefully
    • You don’t start from zero

It’s like flipping a house. The foundation is already there.

You just paint the walls and update the kitchen, and someone’s paying double.

How To Doing Existing Content Optimization Forever

    Want to rinse and repeat?

Here’s a quick checklist to keep optimizing like a boss:

    Monthly:

    1. Run the Opportunities report
    2. Identify low-hanging fruit
    3. Check which content is declining

    Update:

    1. Add new info/stats
    2. Refresh visuals
    3. Inject relevant keywords
    4. Improve internal linking

    Track:

    1. Set up rank tracking
    2. Monitor traffic spikes
    3. Celebrate small wins

But Doesn’t This Sound Too Easy

    Yeah, I thought so too.

But, most ignore their old content like it’s last year’s iPhone. Meanwhile, your old blog posts are sitting there like, ā€œPlease… just give me 20 minutes of your time and I’ll make you famousā€.

All you have to do is listen and edit.

    Final Thoughts

I am not saying that you should never write new content again. But I am saying that if you already have 50+ blog posts, you should put the existing content optimization to work.

    Stop publishing and praying.

Start optimizing. Because updating old content isn’t just smart. It’s efficient and it’s scalable. And in my case, it got me from ā€œmehā€ traffic to 40,000+ monthly visitors and counting.

    Go ahead.
