Backlinks are the holy grail of SEO.
Everyone wants them.
But no one wants to pay $500 or $1,000 for a single link.
But guess what?
I got a high-quality backlink from a domain with an 85 DR (Domain Rating) for free. Yes, free. I didn’t have to spend any money for this and I didn’t do anything except one thing.
Backlink data from the Ahrefs Webmaster:
But, how?
Let me introduce you to the brilliant, somewhat sneaky (but totally ethical) strategy called podcast link building, this is a somewhat new and old technique used by mid and expert levels.
By the way, let’s get started.
Step 1: Find the Podcast Person in Your Niche
Every niche has that one person who’s everywhere. You know who I’m talking about. The one who’s guesting on every podcast, from The 5 A.M. Hustle Show to Knitting Ninjas Weekly.
They’re out there spreading their knowledge like butter on hot toast.
Here’s what you do:
- Find someone in your niche who has an impressive podcast resume.
- Download their headshot from their website or Google Images.
Step 2: Let Google Do the Detective Work
Once you have their headshot, it’s time to put it to work.
Go to Google Reverse Image Search and upload the headshot. Google will spit out a list of places where this person’s face has been plastered all over the internet.
Why does this matter?
Because those places are most likely podcast websites or guest blog features.
These are your potential targets.
Step 3: Become Podcast Guest
Visit every website where you find that person as a podcast guest.
And you now have to email those website owners to become guests.
Now comes the outreach. This is where you need to put on your charm and craft an email that makes people want to hit Reply faster than they hit snooze on Monday morning.
Here’s a rough template:
Subject: Loved your episode with [Podcast Pro’s Name]
Hey [Name],
I recently came across your podcast episode with [Podcast Person Name], what an amazing conversation. [Optional: Add a specific compliment about the episode to show you actually listened to it.]
As someone in the [Your Niche] space, I have a lot of overlapping expertise and a few unique insights I think your audience would love. I’d be thrilled to join your podcast and share stories about [Your Unique Angle/Story].
I’d also be happy to promote the episode to my audience of [X followers/visitors] to ensure it gets even more exposure.
Let me know if this sounds interesting.
Best,
[Your Name]
This email is not just about getting on the podcast. It is about building a relationship, adding value, and making it easy for the podcast host to say Yes.
Step 4: Take the Backlink Rewards
Here’s the magic part:
Most podcast hosts will create a landing page or blog post for your episode on their website. And guess what they’ll include on that page, a nice, juicy backlink to your website.
Like this one:
You don’t even have to ask for it.
It is the norm of industry.
How It Played Out for Me
Let me paint a picture for you. I reached out to a podcast that had previously hosted a big name in my niche. I shared my story, cracked a few jokes, and pitched myself as a guest.
A week later, I was recording an episode with them.
2 weeks after that, my backlink from a DR 85 domain went live.
Here’s what it looked like on their site:
- A short bio about me
- A direct link to my website
- A warm feeling of SEO victory
Note: I was not as a guest. I just hired a guy for this.
Why This Works And Why You Should Do It Too
- Podcasts are hungry for guests. Most podcast hosts aren’t flooded with guest applications. They need people to fill their schedule. If you’re relevant and add value, they’ll welcome you with open arms.
- It’s a win-win. They get a guest, you get exposure and a backlink. Everybody leaves happy and with slightly better SEO.
- Backlinks happen naturally. Unlike other link-building strategies, you’re not begging or bartering for links. They’re a byproduct of the podcasting process.
Final Thoughts
Podcast link building is not just an SEO hack. It’s a networking opportunity, a way to share your story, and a chance to connect with your audience on a deeper level.
So, what are you waiting for?
Find a face, search it, and start your journey to podcast stardom (and free backlinks).
Who knows?
Your next DR 85 backlink could be just one email away.
